Ultimate Blog Ping Script

Anyone that writes a blog and is looking for traffic knows that pinging the various directories and feed sites is a good way to get a little extra exposure. However, this can be kind of a pain. There are places that ping multiple sites for you, but none of them seems to be all-inclusive. Personally, I don’t really like going to another site and manually submitting a form each time I want to run a ping, and I don’t like not knowing what’s going on in the background.
You can use the built in XML-RPC ping features of some blogging tools, but there are cons there as well. In WordPress for example, it causes annoying delays every time you save your article. As well, WordPress has a small bug in their current XML-RPC code that submits the parameters in a slightly incorrect order from the spec, which not all sites account for.
So I took matters into my own hands and wrote up a script that I can just run whenever I want to do a ping, and I can manage the list of URLs and monitor the results myself. Because I’m so kind, I’ll share the source code with you here!
Note that this is PHP code, so your server has to be running PHP if you want to use it. Alternatively, you can just grab PHP, install it on your local machine, and run this script manually. I’ll leave that up to you to figure out.
The current version of this script makes use of the Incutio XML-RPC library, which you can grab from their site. Save it to a file named “IXR_Library.inc.php” and put it in the same folder as my script.
To modify the sites that will be pinged, just add or remove them as you please. It should be pretty straightforward, even if you’re not a programmer. Just copy one of the other sites, paste to a new line, and edit the URL. As well, don’t forget to change the blog name, blog URL, blog update URL and RSS feed URL.
The script will attempt to use the “weblogUpdates.extendedPing” remote procedure, and if that fails it will attempt to use the “weblogUpdates.ping” remote procedure. I generally run this script after each new post, and after any kind of significant edit to a post.

If you get any messages that look like this:
Failed extended XML-RPC ping for “http://api.feedster.com/ping”: -32700->parse error. not well formed
That’s because the “extended method” ping failed. That’s not a problem, not all sites support it. You should see a “thanks for the ping” type message immediately following it, which is the successful “basic method” ping.
In an upcoming article, I will be improving this script to also ping your sitemap to sites that will accept it. If you have any other ideas, or pingable sites to add, please post them on this article and I will add the changes in here. I had a good three times the ping URLs than what is included in this list, but they either wouldn’t accept the XML-RPC ping, or I just couldn’t connect to them at all.

Activating ping.php resulted in the following error:-

I’m pretty sure the problem is that when I posted the code, WordPress converted my single and double quotes into fancy ones that PHP doesn’t understand. I’ll try and fix that in my post, but in the meantime, just search and replace all the single and double quotes with the regular ones on your keyboard :)

Ok I fixed up the quotes and I just did a copy->paste from here right into notepad, saved it as a PHP file and ran it, and it ran fine. So if you copy it again, then it should be good!

Thanks for the comments, I appreciate it! The first plugin is out, sticky permalinks. The next one is going to be a post queuing tag which I’m giving a burn-in run on my own sites. Then a custom tagging system, which is also having a burn-in run on my sites. Once I’m happy with them I’ll be polishing off the ping/sitemap plugin. I’m pretty excited to have all four of these done, as I am already using them heavily on my own sites, and I think they will benefit a lot of people! The custom tag one is particularly cool, it’s like a dozen plugins in one tight little package :)
